Noise-cancelling headphones: what the specs mean
Which headphone specs change what you hear, which ones are marketing, and when this category is actually cheaper than its list price.

The short version
Two decisions do most of the work: the shape you will actually wear, and whether you need active noise cancelling. Our comparison schema gives form factor and ANC the top importance weight, battery life with ANC on the next, then weight and codec support, then water resistance and model year. Almost nobody returns headphones over a codec; plenty return them because the clamp hurt.
Buy over-ear if you sit still for long stretches and want the most cancelling and battery per dollar. Buy in-ear if the pair has to live in a pocket or survive sweat. On-ear gives up the seal that does most of the isolating and still sits on your head all day. Ignore the codec argument until you know which codecs your own phone can send, and do not pay a flagship price in the weeks before a successor is announced.
What actually matters
Form factor is top-weighted because it constrains everything else. An over-ear cup has room for a bigger driver, a bigger battery and a pad that seals around the ear, which is why the longest battery figures and the strongest cancelling live in that shape; it is also hot and bulky. In-ears trade that for a seal made by a silicone tip inside the ear canal: portable, and far more dependent on getting the right tip. On-ears press on the cartilage rather than around it, so they leak and they get sore.
ANC carries the same weight, and it helps to know what it physically does. It plays an inverted copy of what its microphones hear, which works on low-frequency continuous noise: an aircraft cabin, a bus, an air handler. It works much less well on speech and keyboards, which are higher in frequency and change too fast to track. Those are handled by the seal, not the electronics, which is why a well-fitted in-ear beats a loose over-ear on office chatter. Lose the seal and you lose the cancelling and the bass together.
Battery life with ANC on is measured at a fixed moderate volume, so real use tracks it directionally. For over-ears, the mid-twenties of hours or more means charging weekly rather than nightly. For earbuds, the figure that matters on a flight is the buds' own per-charge life, in single-digit hours; the total quoted with the case is a recharging budget, not a session.
Multipoint keeps two devices connected at once, so a call interrupts the laptop without a menu dive, and it is the feature people miss most once they have had it. Several manufacturers disable it when the high-bitrate codec is switched on, so you get one or the other while the box advertises both. Weight ranks mid-table, but grams are a poor proxy: clamp force and pad material decide comfort at hour three. Water resistance is irrelevant at a desk and a hard gate at the gym.
Reading the spec sheet, and what is noise
Codecs are where this category does its most confusing marketing. A codec is only in play when both ends support it and both ends agree to use it. On an iPhone the chain is SBC or AAC, full stop: a headphone that supports LDAC or aptX Adaptive will not use either with that phone. On Android it varies by handset. The question is never what the headphone supports, it is what your phone will send.
Even when the chain lines up, the headline bitrate is a ceiling rather than a setting. LDAC negotiates between roughly 990, 660 and 330 kilobits per second and steps down when the radio environment is congested, and nothing tells you which rung you are on. LC3, the codec that arrived with LE Audio, is a genuine advance in efficiency and latency, but it needs the phone, the operating system and the headphone all on board, and that is still patchy.
The honest summary: the gap between AAC and the best available codec on the same headphones is much smaller than the gap between a good and a bad ear seal. A Hi-Res Wireless badge describes what the radio link can carry, not what you stream into it. Several other figures look technical and tell you almost nothing.
- Driver diameter. A 50 mm driver is not better than a 40 mm one; enclosure, tuning and damping decide the sound.
- Frequency response ranges such as 4 Hz to 40 kHz, quoted with no tolerance and beyond human hearing at both ends.
- Cancellation depth in decibels with no frequency band attached. Thirty decibels at 100 Hz and three at 2 kHz are different products.
- Microphone count. Eight in a poor array lose to four in a good one, and no spec sheet reports how you sound on a call.
Tradeoffs by segment
At the top of the over-ear market, the tier whose recent launch list prices ran from the high three hundreds to the mid five hundreds, you pay for the best cancelling, the best transparency modes, call quality that survives wind, and materials that survive a bag. That advantage is real, but it is the tail end of the curve, and it shows mainly during hours of sustained low-frequency noise. The mid tier, launching around one to two hundred dollars, delivers most of the cancelling on a plane and most of the battery; what you give up is transparency quality, microphones outdoors and app polish.
In earbuds, the flagship tier that has launched in the two hundreds buys cancelling that rivals over-ears, plus ecosystem features that deserve clear eyes: Apple's automatic switching needs Apple hardware, Samsung's equivalents need a Galaxy phone, Google's need a Pixel. Matching the buds to the phone you already own is usually worth more than a spec advantage in the other direction. Open-ear and bone-conduction designs do not seal at all, trading cancelling for hearing traffic while you run, which is a safety decision rather than an audio one.
When this category actually discounts
Back-to-school runs from mid-July to the first week of September in our retail calendar and names headphones explicitly, which is why the July cluster, Amazon's mid-summer event and the competing Walmart, Target and Best Buy events, is the first serious window of the year.
Black Friday and Cyber Week are the deepest. Our calendar opens the Black Friday window about three weeks early, which reflects how the event now runs: the mid-November price is usually the price. Post-holiday clearance, from the day after Christmas to mid-January, clears superseded models.
The product cycle is the strongest signal. Our calendar tracks Apple's September event as a wearables and headphones cycle with its own lookahead window, and the pattern holds across the category: flagship over-ears run multi-year cycles, and the outgoing generation does not leave the shelf, it becomes the value pick. Our seed catalogue records one flagship line launching in 2020, 2022 and 2025 at list prices that rose fifty dollars each time, and carries all three as currently sold. The weeks after a successor is announced are the best moment in the cycle.
What a real discount looks like here
Headphones are a textbook case of the permanently inflated list price. A flagship launches at list, settles to a lower street price within months, then spends years being advertised against the original figure. A struck-through number nobody has paid since launch is not a discount, however large the subtraction looks.
We apply a specific test before calling a former price a former price: the advertised was-price must have been the prevailing price for at least thirty percent of the previous ninety days in our own observations, or we label it the retailer's list price and score the offer's authenticity down. By hand it becomes one question. What has this model actually cost over the last three months? A related trap: color variants of the same headphone sit at different prices and go on sale at different times, so a comparison that quietly switches color is not a comparison.
Questions to ask before you buy
None of these needs a review to answer.
- Which codecs does my phone actually support? Settle that before reading a single codec claim on the box.
- Where will these live: a plane, an open-plan office, a gym, a desk? ANC helps enormously in the first and much less in the second.
- Will I wear them more than an hour at a stretch? If so, clamp force and pad material outrank everything on the sound side.
- Does the app make me choose between multipoint and the high-bitrate codec?
- Are replacement ear pads still sold for this model? Pads fail first, and a model without them has a fixed lifespan.
- Is a successor due within a couple of months, and am I paying a current-generation price for the outgoing one?
- What is the return window, and does it survive opening the box?
How we would check this
There are fifty headphone models in this catalogue across seventeen brands, and price tracking on them has started. We do not yet have verified offers to publish, and rather than fill the space with a plausible-looking number, the pages say so.
The bar is the same for every product here: at least thirty observations across at least fourteen days before a verdict stops being labeled an early read, at least two independent sources or one licensed API feed, and an authenticity score that clears the former-price test above. Once that data exists, a headphone page shows the price history, where today sits in the ninety-day range, which retailer is genuinely cheapest after shipping, and a Buy, Wait or Skip verdict computed from published weights that contain no commission term. Questions shoppers ask
Do more expensive headphones cancel noise better?
Up to a point, then the curve flattens. The step from no ANC to competent ANC is enormous; the step to best-in-class shows mainly during hours of sustained low-frequency noise. Above the mid tier you are mostly paying for transparency, calls and build.
Is LDAC or aptX worth paying for?
Only if your phone can send that codec, and even then it matters less than the fit of the earpiece. On an iPhone the answer is AAC, which makes the question moot. Check too whether enabling it disables multipoint.
Are earbuds or over-ears better at noise cancelling?
Neither wins outright. Over-ears have more room for electronics and a larger sealed volume, so the best go deepest on low-frequency noise. But an in-ear with the right tip seals very effectively against higher frequencies, which is what ANC handles worst.
How long do wireless headphones actually last?
The battery is a consumable and the ear pads usually wear out first. Check whether replacement pads are still sold for that model, and whether the manufacturer offers a battery service.
Why is there no price on some headphone pages yet?
Because we do not have enough verified observations for that model. We would rather say tracking has started than publish a figure we cannot substantiate.
