Laptop buying guide: the specs that decide how long it lasts

The memory and storage you cannot change later, a weight figure that outranks the graphics card, and the sale window that matters more than Black Friday.

Most laptop advice is about performance. It should be about permanence. The specifications that decide whether a machine is still pleasant in four years are memory, storage and weight, and on most thin laptops the first two are soldered to the board. Get them right and a mid-priced machine ages gracefully; get them wrong and no amount of processor makes up for it. The other half of the job is timing, and here the reliable window is not Black Friday. This guide has no current prices; the one precise figure below is a launch list price.

What actually matters, and what does not

We score laptops on twelve attributes weighted 1 to 5. Two carry the top weight: the processor and the amount of memory. Memory sits there for a reason unrelated to speed. On most thin-and-light designs it is packaged with the processor, so 16 GB is not a starting point you can improve on later, it is the machine's ceiling for life.

The processor is weighted 5 and its derived class 4, which together say the platform matters more than the clock. Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips give outstanding battery life on Arm, but x86 software runs through emulation and the exceptions still bite: specialist plug-ins, some VPN and security drivers, and games with kernel-level anti-cheat. Apple's M-series is generational: our catalogue notes the M3 MacBook Air was replaced by the M4 in March 2025 while continuing to sell at retailers, which is when an outgoing model becomes the value pick.

Screen size and weight are both weighted 4, and the pairing decides whether the machine leaves the desk. A 14-inch class laptop lands around three pounds, a 16-inch around four to five and a half. Weight outranks graphics here because you carry it every day and you game on some days.

  • Memory (5): usually soldered. 16 GB is the floor for a machine you keep; 8 GB cannot be revisited.
  • Processor and class (5 and 4): pick the platform first. Sustained power beats peak clock.
  • Storage (4): 512 GB is comfortable. Replaceable on most Windows machines, soldered on Apple silicon.
  • Weight (4, lower is better): the specification you feel daily, which is why it outranks the GPU.
  • Screen size (4, neutral): 14 inches to carry, 16 inches for a desk machine.
  • Battery (3): compare watt-hours, not the manufacturer's hour claims.
  • Graphics (3): only for games and GPU work, and the name does not say how fast it is.
  • Resolution (3): 1080p is fine at 14 inches, coarse at 16. OLED costs battery.
  • Refresh rate and ports (2 each): 120 Hz is a nicety outside gaming; ports matter once charging takes one.
  • Model year (2): last generation at clearance is usually the best value on the shelf.

How to read a laptop spec sheet

The most expensive mistake here is reading a review of one configuration and buying another. A model name covers builds that differ in memory, storage, panel and graphics, and the machine on the shelf is rarely the one reviewed. Match the part number, not the name. The second is trusting a GPU name: it says nothing about the power budget, and the gap between a low-power and a high-power build of the same part is often wider than the gap between two adjacent tiers.

  • "Up to 20 hours of battery life": a vendor test, usually local video at reduced brightness. Use watt-hours.
  • "AI PC": Copilot+ is a real hardware bar, but a TOPS figure says nothing about your applications.
  • "MIL-STD-810 tested": self-declared by the manufacturer, not a certification.
  • "Expandable to 64 GB" on a soldered machine: the chipset's limit, not the laptop's.
  • "RTX" with no wattage: find the total graphics power in watts in the detailed spec sheet.
  • Dell's Inspiron and XPS names: our catalogue records both retired from 2025 for a Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max scheme, so a review of an XPS 13 may describe a machine now sold under another name, with both generations on the shelf at once.

Three segments, and what you give up in each

These bands describe where the market has sat. They are not offers on any model.

Entry, roughly $300 to $700. Acer's Aspire 3, ASUS's Vivobook 15, Lenovo's IdeaPad Slim 3, Dell's Inspiron 15 and its successor the Dell 14 Plus, and Chromebooks such as Acer's Chromebook Plus 515, which our catalogue records as launching at a $399.99 US list price in 2023. Expect eight gigabytes of soldered memory, a dim 60 Hz panel and a keyboard that flexes. A good Chromebook or a refurbished machine from a higher tier usually serves better here.

Middle, roughly $800 to $1,500, where the category's value concentrates: MacBook Air 13 and 15 in M3 and M4 forms, Lenovo's Yoga Slim 7x, ASUS's Zenbook 14 OLED, HP's OmniBook X 14, Microsoft's Surface Laptop 7, Dell's XPS 13, and ThinkPads such as the T14s and X1 Carbon when a generation is cleared. Sixteen gigabytes, 512 gigabytes, a good screen and a working day of battery.

Premium and specialist, roughly $1,600 and up, for two reasons that are not the same purchase. Sustained professional work argues for MacBook Pro 14 and 16 with M4 Pro or M4 Max, or Dell's XPS 16. Games and GPU compute argue for ASUS's ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16, Lenovo's Legion Pro 7i, HP's OMEN 16 or Alienware's m18. Gaming machines discount more often, because GPU generations turn over fast.

When laptops actually go on sale, and why

Back to school is the reliable window, and it is longer than people assume: our calendar runs it from July 15 to September 5 and lists laptops first among its categories. It ends at Labor Day, itself listed for laptops. The second lever is the component cycle: processor generations are announced in January and the laptops built on them ship through spring, so the previous chassis is cleared as the new one appears.

One lever gets forgotten. Several states run sales-tax holidays inside that window, and Florida's has included personal computers under a price cap in past years. On a machine at the top of the mid segment, an exemption at your combined state and local rate can be worth more than that week's discount, and it stacks with it. Dates are announced annually by each state.

  • Back to school, July 15 to September 5: the most reliable window for consumer laptops.
  • Labor Day, the first Monday in September: listed for laptops, and the end of that season.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Week: Cyber Monday skews to online electronics, where laptops live.
  • Post-holiday clearance, December 26 to January 15, overlapping the processor announcements.
  • Prime Day and the events shadowing it: dates announced each year rather than fixed.
  • State sales-tax holidays: several states exempt computers under a cap, and the saving stacks.

What a real laptop discount looks like

Laptop list prices are among the least meaningful in retail. Many configurations are introduced at a list that is never the ordinary selling price, which makes the percentage beside a laptop the least informative number on the page. Our test borrows its clock from California's former-price statute and sets its own bar: a was-price counts as a former price only if it was the prevailing price for at least thirty percent of the previous ninety days in our own observations. The ninety days are the law's; the thirty percent is ours. Otherwise we show the figure as the retailer's list price.

The trap specific to laptops is configuration substitution. The discounted machine is often not the one you researched: eight gigabytes instead of sixteen, 256 instead of 512, a lower-tier GPU, or the same GPU at a lower power budget. The model name is identical. As an illustration of the method rather than a real listing, a 16 GB / 512 GB build and an 8 GB / 256 GB build of one family are separate products in our record, and a reduction on the cheaper one says nothing about the other.

A discount on a chassis whose replacement has been announced is clearance, not a hidden bargain. That is often the right thing to buy, as long as you know the price will keep sliding.

Questions to ask before you buy

The first three cannot be fixed after the box is open.

  • Is the memory soldered, and is the amount here enough for the years you plan to keep it?
  • Is the storage an M.2 drive you can replace, or is it soldered?
  • What is the battery capacity in watt-hours, next to the other machines on your list?
  • Does every application you depend on run natively here, particularly on an Arm machine?
  • If graphics matter, what is the total graphics power in watts for this configuration?
  • How many ports remain once the charger is in, and do the USB-C ports carry video out?
  • Is the part number on this listing the same as the one in the review you read?

The category-specific part is matching. More than anywhere else we track, laptop listings share a name and differ in substance, so our matcher works from the part number and treats each configuration as its own product with its own history. Questions shoppers ask

Is 8 GB of memory really not enough any more?

For a browser, mail and documents it still works. The problem is that it is usually soldered, so it is the machine's permanent ceiling, and software trends the other way. If you replace laptops every two years it is a defensible saving. If you keep them four or five, it is what ends the machine's life.

Are Arm-based Windows laptops safe to buy yet?

For mainstream work, largely yes, and the battery life is genuinely better. The risk is specific rather than general: emulation handles most x86 software, but specialist audio and design plug-ins, some VPN and security drivers, and games with kernel-level anti-cheat can fail outright. Write down the five applications you cannot work without and check each one's native support.

Can I add memory or storage later?

Storage often, memory usually not. Most thin-and-light laptops package memory with the processor, and every Apple silicon machine solders both. Many Windows laptops, especially larger and gaming models, still take a standard M.2 drive, which makes a small drive a cheap mistake to correct later.

Do I need a discrete graphics card?

Only for games, 3D work, or GPU-accelerated video and machine-learning tasks. Integrated graphics in current Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple parts handle multiple displays, video calls, photo work and light video editing. A discrete GPU costs weight, heat, fan noise and battery every day for performance you use on some days.
